In 2008, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) started a highly competitive research program named "Spitzenforschung und Innovation in den Neuen Ländern".

The program's aims are long-term, structure-building collaborations. Those will contribute to establish internationally visible, topic-oriented and competitive research centres.
Object of funding is basic research with international reputation and application orientated research with huge market entrance potential. The BMBF also lays much emphasis on a focused young talent promotion and the transfer between science and industry.

KD OptiMi succeeded the competition as one of the first research initiative.

The Thuringian State Government supports the Graduate Research School OMITEC - instigated by OptiMi to qualify young scientists.

Substantial objectives of the national program ProExzellenz are enhancing and strengthening existing excellent research structures and success in competition for the most talented minds.
