Ever smaller and more complex microsystems penetrate nowadays the daily life - in both private and professional sectors. In particular, the optical functionality often plays a major role.

A prominent example of the implementation of a new optical approach using innovative methods of microsystem technology for miniaturization, is the recently developed ultra-thin camera based on the model of insect eyes, which has been designed in Jena.

Research works on the transfer of the compound eyes principle to other micro-optical systems are the subject of this co-operation. With it, new optical microsystems can be developed that combine in a unique way mechanical, optical, fluidic and electronic functions, and thus they are more powerful and resource-saving than their conventional predecessors.
